ANALYSIS, COUNSELLING OR PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Much of the practice of counselling and psychotherapy is based on psychoanalytic ideas. Modern psychoanalysis is influenced by contemporary philosophy and progressive thinking around gender and sexuality. Generally speaking an analytic therapy may last longer and involve more frequent sessions. This is decided in discussion with the therapist in the initial sessions.

WHO IS IT FOR?

People of all cultural, class backgrounds and sexualities. Our lives in the 21st century may benefit from more material opportunities but are perhaps without some of the more stable reference points of previous generations. Most people find that at some stage in their lives there are difficulties which they are unable to resolve in the ways they have been used to. Among the issues which may prompt someone to see a therapist are:

a crisis brought on by a bereavement or a relationship break-up

enduring periods of depression and anxiety

obsessional thoughts or behaviour

drug or alcohol addiction

problems with social or work relationships

confusion and anxiety about sex, sexual orientation or gender

fear of intimacy

a sense of having lost meaning or enjoyment in life

Talking to an analytic therapist enables the individual to work through what may at first seem overwhelming and immovable problems.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Any therapy is fuelled by the individual's desire to look at and speak about his or her life. A regular time and place sets up a safe and reliable environment where the individual is encouraged to speak as freely as possible about what is on their mind, including dreams and fantasies. The therapist listens and replies in various ways, sometimes offering interpretations. Over time, a relationship and a conversation develops which can bring a fresh perspective and an opportunity to think differently about what may be going on.
